East Iceland
East Iceland includes spectacular landscapes with deep fjords, beautiful and powerful waterfalls and great glaciers. The area is sparsely populated and its cultural centre is the town of Egílstaðir at Lake Lögurinn which is the third larged lake of Iceland. In the east of Lögurinn the visitor can find Iceland’s largest forest (Hallormsstadur). It’s also a great experience to discover the mountain Snæfell and the volcano Askja in the eastern highlands
Not far away the seaport Seyðisfjörður is situated. The village is known to travellers as the arrival and departure point of the Norröna ferry which sails between Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Denmark.
Further in the south the well-known glacial lake Jökulsálon and the beautiful national park Skaftafell can be visited. Here you can undertake great hiking tours in
an intact nature. The national park was established in 1967 but expanded and renamed in 2007. The new park called Vatnajökulsthjódgardur is now with an area of around 12,000 square kilometers
the biggest national park in Europe.
